Authors: Ida Gamble-Gumbs, Ida R. Gumbs, Bob Gumbs, and Ada Gamble

Kwanza-riffic!
The Gumbs family knows their Kwanza and shares wonderfully! This is an amazing and enlightening little book on how to celebrate Kwanza with your children and (if you're still together) spouse. There are recipes (including one for an excellent spiced rum chicken) and ideas for party games (Coffee-pot suprise is our family's favorite). I highly recommend this book if you are looking to educate yourself in this misunderstood holiday.

How to plan a Kwanza celebration
This is one of the finest books I have read on the subject of a Kwanza celebration. It is a how-to book that will give anyone interested in learning the many aspects of Kwanza the tools to prepare and enjoy a memorable and festive occasion.

In fact, this book not only discusses other Kwanza events but has many timely and tasty recipes that will make the advanced and beginner cook take notice.

This is one of the most important books I have read to date and I would suggest that anyone wanting to know the true meaning and cultural message of Kwanza, read this book!

Ada and the Doc: An Account of the Ada Leboeuf-Thomas Dreher Murder Case

Author: Charles M. Hargroder
Average review score:

A question about this book.
This is not a review, but I don't know any other forum for asking this question:

Does this book feature photographs of the key players?

fantastic job!
As the great grandaughter of Ada and Jim LeBoeuf, I really appreciate the job done by the author. He presents the facts of the case. When reading the newspaper accounts during the time of the trial, it seemed as if the media was anxious to just print dirt and rumor which may have had a great deal to do with the outcome of the trial. Thank you Mr. Hargroder for a well written book on my family history.

Ada and the Doc
Charles Hargroder has accomplished something that few writers can claim. His "Ada and the Doc" is a little gem in the world of non-fiction.

He has written about an unusual case, and it turns out to be a very accurate accounting of the events that form the basis for this non-fiction book. His credentials as an outstanding reporter for The Times-Picayune (New Orleans) and all the awards he has garnered for his work make him more than qualified to compile this type information and write a book about it. As far as documentation, it is definitely the best.

As a regular book reviewer for several major newspapers, I found this work to be one of the best to come out of Louisiana in quite some time. There are many writers who claim New Orleans as their base of operations, and they use the atmosphere of this historic city to illustrate much of their material.

Hargroder actually grew up in the area where these people lived so he knew where to get the records and where to find the people who knew of the case. It's a part of Louisiana that you seldom read about but yet it is one of the most historic parts of the state. He also made it a point to ignore all the heresay surrounding this case. He did not pad the book with this kind of personal opinions and "old tales," which, by the way, are still circulating today. The relatives he interviewed gave him an accurate accounting too.

With access to The Times-Picayune files, courthouse records, and the interviews, he has pieced together a very interesting story, factual and entertaining from the reader's viewpoint. Even current Governor Mike Foster, who also hails from this area, complimented Hargroder on his work.

It isn't every day that you pick up a book of non-fiction and read it as if it were fiction. This is one of those books. It holds your interest, and you can almost feel the sweltering heat of the courtroom. The people are real, and the events surrounding the case are still discussed to this day.

Hargroder has done his homework. The end result is a factual look at one of the biggest trials of the century. "Ada and the Doc" should be on every collector's shelf, especially those individuals with Louisiana ties.

Gathering in the Sun: An Alphabet in Spanish and English
This is a must have for any chicano especially with kids. It is a magnificant piece of art that allows us to talk to our kids and others about our latino heritage in the agricultural fields of America. I bought this book because I am a fan of Simon Silva's art work and this book is like having a selection of his prints to display on the coffee table instead of the wall. It is a great conversational piece as art or history, as a tool to teach our personal heritage or as an educational piece for those of different ethnic backgrounds, and last but not least it is great for young and old. I love it!

A Work of Art
This book is not only a wonderful cultural asset it is very pleaseing to the eyes and the spirit. Children will learn valuable knowledge about the cultures the surround us and not even know they are leaning, beacause of all the beautiful drawings. You will read this again and again. I often use just one page in storytime and it sparks a whole hour of interest.

CAPTIVATING!
In this alphabet book, the author combines an alphabetic list of bilingual poems depicting themes of harvest, work, values, and home that both honor and celebrate the lives of migrant farmworkers. The book describes Spanish traditions and the Mexican heritage of the farmworkers with their families while introducing the letters of the alphabet in both English and Spanish. Each poem is presented first in Spanish and then in English. Zubizarreta's English poem on each page is not an exact word for word translation of its Spanish counterpart, but it translates the mood and essence of the original Spanish poem's message. Each Spanish target word describes how the plant, fruit, vegetable, person, or feeling relates to the lives of the workers. The illustrator, Simon Silva uses vibrant paintings portraying their farmlands and lives at work and at home. This alphabet book has great significance, because the poetry gives voice and pride to the experiences of Hispanic agricultural workers. The poems give strong mind pictures by using descriptive words that are attractive and meaningful to the experiences of the farmworkers. This book should be read aloud to a bilingual group of students by a reader who can skillfully use both languages to communicate the moods, otherwise maybe just one language should be read at a time. Adults as well as children will appreciate the poetry and artwork as well as the music that supplements this collection by Suni Paz. She captures the "Hispanic heart" with Spanish guitar music repeating phrases from the Spanish poetry.

Excellent Introductory Ada book for Beginner's!
As a C/C++ programmer, I desired a beginner's Ada book which was fully informative, easy to understand, and inviting to read with sufficient examples both for reviews and exercises throughout the chapters.

After seeking for a beginner's Ada book for days, I finally decided to settle on "Rendezvous with Ada 95" mainly because of the customer reviews I have previously read on Amazon.com. Yes, there is quite a selection of Ada books, however, it's difficult to select one book worth your time and money, especially if you need to learn Ada FAST!

So far, "Rendezvous with Ada 95" is extremely informative, very well written, easy to understand and follow and contains sufficient exercises anyone could understand. Overall, this book is an EXCELLENT beginner's book!

I recommend this as a "first" book for any amateur, intermediate or advanced programmer. Don't look any further, end your search here and settle on "Rendezvous with Ada 95"... it is worth your time and you will definitely comprehend the information and learn the language... you won't be sorry!

Excellent introduction to Ada
Rendezvous with Ada is an excellent introduction to the wide scope and applicability of the Ada 95 language. The book is well written, containing chapters that are fairly self-contained and touch upon all key Ada concepts. One suggestion for a future edition would be inclusion of a chapter on Ada's current use in real-world projects, as well as a status report on Ada bindings to various industry-standard APIs.

An exceptionally well-written and complete book.
I've owned Rendezvous with Ada 95 for about three years and it is still my favorite Ada 95 book. I have purchased other Ada 95 books that I like but none of them is as clearly written as this book by Naidich. It is the first book I loan to friends who want to learn about Ada programming and it is the first book I refer to when I want to explore another capability of this wonderful programming language.

From the Nile to the Jordan

A Moving Story Of Life In Egypt
This is a marvelous, moving document of Jewish life in Cairo, before the creation of the Jewish State of Israel. A young girl, father and grandmother live a wonderful life in Egypt, where the father is a prominent attorney. At that time, the Jews had a rich cultural life in Egypt, with theatre, concerts, the best of all European culture. However, once the State of Israel was founded, and Palistinians emigrated to Egypt, life for the Egyptian Jews was made a living hell. Jews had to sell their property for next to nothing and flee to whatever country would take them. The young people went to Israel, but some of the older generation went to Europe. Ada's father had his money transferred to a Swiss bank, and when he went to the Swiss bank to get h is money, he was told that the Egyptian government had confiscated all his money, INBAR's father left the bank a broken man and died shortly afterwards. He was buried in a pauper's grave in Paris. INBAR's grandmother, a wonderful and colorful character, refused to leave Cairo and all her beautiful possessions, and threw herself down a flight of steps in her home and killed herself. The novel is a brilliant story of the sadness of emigration, of leaving one's home and moving to another country. In Israel, she met her beloved, Raoul, and together they built a beautiful life in their new homeland.

An Accurate Account of the Tragedy of the Jews of Egypt
This is a sad but accurate account of the tragic events that led to the Second Exodus of the Jews of Egypt, which took place in the 1940's, 50's and 60's. Author Ada Aharoni captured the thoughts and emotions of youthful Jews growing up in Egypt in volatile times of national liberation and Arab-Jewish conflict, and their eventual forced departure to Israel.

Ada Aharoni is well qualified to write about this. She grew up as a Jew in Egypt herself, and both she and her husband were forced to leave the country and now live in Israel, where they teach at Technion University in Haifa.

The story takes on very difficult emotional and historical issues and presents a very sound explanation from the point of view of idealistic young Egyptians Jews, as well as their parents and grandmothers.

The most wonerful and unusual thing about Ada's book is that in spite of the sadness and tragedy described in this story, Ada and the heroine of her story "Inbar" are full of hope for a future without war and violence in the Middle East. Professor Aharoni dedicates a great deal of effort to promoting the culture of peace and non-violence, and peaceful coexistence between Arabs and Jews.

I loved this book as well as the author. I highly recommend it for those who enjoy a good story based on real historical events, and for those interested in the past and future of peace in the Middle East.

A SECOND EXODUS IN OUR OWN TIMES!
This is the most exciting and informative novel I have read in years! I didn't even know that there was a Second Exodus of the Jews from Egypt in my own times, and Ada Aharoni has described this astonishing historical period in a convincing and beautiful way.

This book has convinced me that author Ada Aharoni is a major universal writer. From the Nile to the Jordan is a cause for delight, gratitude and celebration. She is exceptionally brave, and she dares tell a story that no others have ventured before. Her story shines with deep and challenging truths about Middle East history, life, women, and the vision of a world beyond war and conflict.

She shrinks from no emotional, ethical or moral complexity. Each of the characters she describes are full of life and vitality. Inbar, the beautiful and courageous heroine dares to have a love affair with handsome but pessimistic Raoul, a fugitive from the Nazi Holocaust, though it is unthinkable in her society. Judge Mosseri, her father, loses all his property but not his dignity, when he is exiled from Egypt together with his family, after the Israeli War of Independence. And Nona Zina, refuses to be exiled and crashes her fine elegant china together with her life.

When Inbar finally finds Raoul in Jerusalem after she thought she had lost him forever, the reader realizes that they both together symbolize the renaissance of a people in their long lost land. The charming and rich descriptions of the scenery, the people, the texture of life in Egypt and then in Israel, are so colorful and convincing that they made me feel I was there and part of the story. In one short phrase, Ada Aharoni is a marvelous writer.

Born in Cairo, Egypt, and spending some years in the US, Ada Aharoni now lives in Haifa, Israel. She won several prestigious prizes and awards, and she was elected one of the 100 World Heroines, in Rochester, New York, in celebration of the Women's Movement founded by Susan B. Anthony. I have read all of Ada Aharoni's books and I highly recommend them. I give five stars to each of them.

Simple and Sweet
My son loves this book as a must read every morning when he wakes up and every night before he goes to bed. We love searching for the mouse and the flea and seeing the movement of the characters before they end up on the bed or off of it. The colors and the change from night to day are so smooth you almost dont notice it.

Good Book
Spanish is our native language and we speak Spanish at home so that our kids learn both Spanish and English. This book is a simple story with rather rich language, my daughter got 3 or 4 words she had never heard before. Besides, my daughter loves the story and the pictures; she likes to look for the mouse and the 'pulga' in all of the pages.

La Casa Adormecida
The language is simple and repeptitive, making this a great book to teach Spanish in Elementary and Middle grades. Illustrations are great. It's also a good book for native speakers practicing reading. I use it as a check-out book for English as a Second Language students, to motivate literacy acquisition.

WOW............What an excellent resource
I teach 2-6 year old children. What a great help this book has been! The book is broken down into seasons. Many projects are interchangable simply by changing the seasonal theme. The color pictures, templates and simple directions make this a MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ANY TEACHER searching for easy projects that will produce grand results.

A terrific resource for teachers and parents
I absolutely love this book! It is a little pricey, but well worth the money spent. I teach both elementary and middle school art and the projects in this book are easily adaptable all kids in this age range. The projects are presented with full color illustration (which certainly contributes to the cost of the printing) and easy to follow instructions. Though most of the projects would be considered 'craft' projects, there are many ideas that can easily be adapted to produce 'fine art' results.

Co-Opetition: 1. A Revolutionary Mindset That Redefines Competition and Cooperation; 2. the Game Theory Strategy That's Changing the Game of Business
Published in Paperback by Doubleday (01 December, 1997)
Authors: Adam M. Brandenburger, Barry J. Nalebuff, and Ada Brandenberger
Average review score:

Game theory applied on business
This book applies game theory on business and does so extremely well. I think game theory is clearly the way to approach the subject of strategy, because regular "corporate" and "business" strategy literature seems only loosely connected to actual strategic thinking. Game theory, on the other hand, is an actual theory for thinking strategically. No-one should probably even refer to himself or herself as a strategist without being literate in game theory.

The authors do a wonderful job laying out the principles. They introduce and give a thorough treatment of the concept of complementarity ("making the pie grow"), which is bound to make you a better strategist. What I also liked in this book is the notion that the best way of increasing profits is often not to play the game well but to actually change how the game is played. Reading about this really gives your mind a jump-start.

PARTS refers to the strategic levers of a game, that is the dimensions across which the game of business can be analyzed and changed (to your advantage of course). The book is filled with case studies where the principles can be seen at work. Co-opetition is simply great value for money.

If, after reading this book, you feel like digging further into game theory (there's a good chance you will) I recommend Games of Strategy by Dixit, which is a superb introductory book.

Creating better strategies using game theory
Just out of college I was very enthusiastic to use game theory to solve business problems. But never found a way to use it. That was forty years ago. This is the first book that transforms a wonderful theory into something you can apply. The three key concepts are the "value net", PARTS and role-playing. The value net is a simple model of the players to consider. Not just your business and your client, but also the competitors, suppliers and complementors (a complimentor adds value to your product like mustard to hot dogs). PARTS are five ways to look at the game. P from players-who are they; may be add new ones, A from Added Value- how much value do you add to the game, if any, R from Rules-can the rules be changed, T from tactics, and S from Scope- making the game bigger. With role-playing I refer to putting yourself in the shoes of all the other players. How do they see the game? The book contains many practical examples. Some of these do not require game theory to think of them but without game theory you would never see all the interesting options. The book also has "spiritual" content. It shows how to find "win-win" theories and avoid price wars that are "lose-lose".Very worthwhile.

Stellar business strategies with real world examples!
Co-opetition debuted before the net arrived commercially, however it could easily have been written about today's hyper-speed corporate environment. (Many companies in the Dot-bomb dead-pool may have benefited from this kind of rational strategic thinking.) As the title indicates, the book is about competition and cooperation in the marketplace. Much of that discussed in the book stems from game theory, determining what moves to make in a game (or marketplace) based on the anticipated actions of the other players. The book presents numerous case studies from a variety of businesses. Each example provides a background of the competitive environment, the implications of different possible moves, and ultimately explains the results of each particular decision. It's a fantastic book, and contains valuable lessons for decision-makers in virtually any capacity.

Co-opetition is especially for those interested in game theory and business strategy. It brings to light the fact that no decision is made in isolation, and demonstrates that a win at all costs mentality is often not the most successful plan of action. Learn to analyze a situation, understand the scenarios that may result because of particular actions, move forward with a better understanding, and well thought out contingency plans for anticipated counter moves.

Alexander And The Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day - Spanish : Alexander And The Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day
Published in School & Library Binding by Atheneum (November, 1989)
Authors: Alma Ada, Ray Cruz, and Judith Viorst
Average review score:

Review of Alexander....
Overall, this was an excellent book. It does not differ much from the english version, and it is, as is the english, wonderfully illustrated. It is not perfect, however. I thought that it was well translated into spanish, however, the words are not as easily read and understood as the english version. Also, it was very disappointing to me that the character's names are the traditional, english names, and were not translated into their spanish cognates. That detracts from any feelings of non-ethnicity and partiality that good literature nees.

Great addition to your library in Spanish
This is a great book for those of us who want to raise our children bilingually and equally wonderful for Spanish-speakers. The Spanish is fun--I also love the repetition of "el día terrible, horrible..." The fact that the names are not translated is fine--not all English names have a Spanish translation and vice-versa. I believe it keeps the integrity of the original version and the Alexander character.

ME VOY A AUSTRALIA !
Qué dice un niño al que TODO le sale mal ? "Me voy a Australia !". Los dibujos - en blanco y negro - están espléndidamente ilustrados, la cara de Alexander es indescriptible por su picardía. Un libro para leer y ver con los hijos a la hora de dormir. Un libro alentador, especial para aquellos niños "difíciles"

Study of the Types
Published in Paperback by Kregel Publications (December, 1998)
Author: Ada R. Habershon
Average review score:

Excellent work on biblical typologies
Ada R. Habershon hits a home-run in her erudite book "Study of the Types." Drawing mostly upon Old Testament typologies and their New Testament antitypes, Habershon shows christological typology in a clear and concise manner. She does not claim her connections and findings to be authoritative or final, she only offers what she considers to be the obvious connections between certain Old Testament ocurrences with New Testament parallels. I for one found the chapters "Types of the Resurrection", "Types of the Holy Spirit" and "The Garments of the Believer" very insightful.

My only complaint about this book is that it is not written to those with moderate or novice understandings and recongition of biblical passages. Habershon frequently and openly quotes scripture without referencing which verse she's quoting. This is fine for those theologians that know the Bible excessively, but if you are just now beginning to familiarize yourself with the Bible, and want to see some of the references and quotations she makes in this book, have a KJV concordance on hand so you can follow her scriptural references (most modern publications of the KJV, like the Scofield, Zondervan, Thomas Nelson, etc., include a concordance in the back).

All in all, I recommend this book for its content and price. Pastors and religion instructors will find the information very helpful in making sense of the Old Testament for students, and the layperson will become more fluent in the language of typology from having studied this wonderful book.

The Greatest book on Typology
About 4 years ago I was headed off to Russia on a missions trip when a friend of mine gave me this book to read while I was there. As soon as I picked it up it lite a fire in me for the study of the Types. Ms. Habershon is very broad in her approach of the types. She possesses not only depth, but also a masterful story telling quality. I cannot tell you how this book has broadened my understanding of the Types but I encourage you to get it. Her list in the back that relate the Church and the Levitical Priesthood are especially interesting. The only book that could give this book a run for it's money is Gleanings from Genesis by A.W. Pink. All I can say about this book is get it! I guarantee you won't regret it.

wonderful and enlightening
This book is so helpful in bringing the Old Testament to life--I never thought I could get through the book of Leviticus until I read this book and actually wanted to learn more about the different types of sacrificies, etc. As a notorious speed-reader, I had to force myself to go slowly so as to absorb all that she was saying.
